MACD

How MACD Works

MACD is calculated by subtracting the 26-period EMA from the 12-period EMA. The result is the MACD line. A 9-period EMA of the MACD line (signal line) is then plotted on top. The histogram shows the difference between the MACD and signal line.

Key Features

1
MACD Line = 12 EMA - 26 EMA
2
Signal Line = 9 EMA of MACD Line
3
Histogram = MACD Line - Signal Line
4
Shows both trend and momentum
5
Zero line indicates trend direction

Trading Signals

  • MACD crosses above signal line - bullish
  • MACD crosses below signal line - bearish
  • MACD above zero line - bullish trend
  • MACD below zero line - bearish trend
  • Histogram expansion shows increasing momentum

Best Used For

Identifying trend direction and strength
Timing entries with crossover signals
Spotting momentum divergences
Confirming price breakouts

Limitations to Consider

  • Lagging indicator - signals after price moves
  • Can produce false signals in ranging markets
  • Multiple parameters can be confusing
  • Divergences may not lead to immediate reversals

MACD FAQs

Common questions about macd

When the MACD line crosses above the signal line, it's a bullish signal suggesting upward momentum. When it crosses below, it's bearish. These crossovers are most reliable when they occur away from the zero line.

The histogram shows the distance between the MACD and signal lines. Growing bars (expanding) indicate increasing momentum in that direction. Shrinking bars suggest momentum is slowing.

The zero line represents where the 12 and 26 EMAs are equal. MACD above zero means the short-term EMA is above the long-term EMA (bullish). Below zero means the opposite (bearish).
